Encourage Who and What They Can Become
What do you hope your children will become when they grow up? Ask that question of parents, and you will get all kinds of answers. The mother of two daredevil boys might just smile and say, âWell . . . at the moment I am concentrating on hoping they live long enough to grow up.â Other parents would answer with detailed descriptions of what they think their kids should do and be.
In his excellent book How to Really Love Your Child, Dr. Ross Campbell identifies a common type of inappropriate parental love for a child as vicariousness: trying to live your life or dreams through the life of your child. For example, âA mother does this by steering her daughter [or son] into. . . situations where she herself longs to be.â4 This is not encouragement but a parentâs manipulation for self-serving purposes.
